The Evening Before

Happy Thanksgiving 2010 :)
from Flickr - by Ashley Llanes
'Twas the night before Thanksgiving, and all through the house...no, that doesn't really have the same ring does it? Well, anyway, it's the evening before Thanksgiving, and I'm certainly looking forward to a nice lookin' feast tomorrow afternoon! The turkey is in the fridge, the grocery shopping has been done (doing it on Monday was a good call!) and my list of what needs to be done tomorrow has been made. A timeline is a good thing to have when you need everything to come out around the same time for a big meal, such as this one!

I'm tempted to make a few things tonight, but at the same time, I like the idea of relaxing, and awaking refreshed to a kitchen just waiting to be used! I always seem to get more done when I get into the kitchen early in the morning, and set my mind to things. After a long day at work...and today was a long one....everything just seems to take a long time.

I'm going to try to post tomorrow evening after all the festivites have been had, and all my guests have gone home, but if it's late, I promise there will be a post on Friday. Enjoy your Thanksgivings, everyone, and eat well!

Bon Appetit!

A Few Days Have Passed

Hi everyone! I apologize for the lack of posts over the past few days. There's a lot going on in the next few weeks, and I've been trying to get ready for many of these things, rather than cooking nightly meals. Let me tell you about everything, so you have some things to look forward to in the next few weeks of posts.

Halloween

Halloween is my favorite day of the entire year, and we throw an annual party! I love to try new, themed recipes for the occasion so I will definitely be writing about all the fun treats that I'll be making. I've already purchased a cookie tin which makes cookies in the shape of witch's fingers, and I found these really cool little sugar appliques, in the shape of knives. They can be added to the top of desserts, with some icing that looks like blood for a really cool murder-scene themed cupcake! The theme of this year's party is Zombies, too, so I'm going to try and do a bunch of appetizers with a play on zombies. I have a big cauldron that I mix drinks in as well, so stay tuned for this year's signature cocktail!

A few days after the party, we depart for a European vacation! I'm so excited about this trip, because we are going to three countries that I've never been to before: Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic. My plan is to write each evening, in order to discuss all the food we ate each day. We're going to be in a different city almost every day, so it should make for some really diverse posts! I can't wait to see the sights and eat the food of three cultures that I have yet to really delve into! We're going to learn together!

A week or so after we return to the states and our daily lives, it will be Thanksgiving, and this year, I'm hosting! My family, and my husband's family, will convene at our place for a delicious feast. I've never hosted a dinner party this big before, but I'm really looking forward to it. I have some ideas for creative sides, and I might even make my own pies for the event! I'm sure there will be more than a few posts on the planning, the shopping, the prepping and the cooking that goes on the day of Thanksgiving! You all know how I love being host...and this one will be a doozy!

Holiday lights

Just a month after that comes the winter holidays, and while I usually celebrate Hanukkah with my family by going out for a nice meal, my husband's parents usually come visit for Christmas Eve and the day of...which means another couple of fancy celebratory meals! I really have my work cut out for me this holiday season, but you know that I'm enjoying every second of it, and this year will be even more special because I can share it all with you, my wonderful readers!

'Tis the season for eatin'!

Running on Empty

Well, I'm running low on pretty much everything in my kitchen. Tomorrow is grocery shopping day, thank goodness, so everything will be restored soon! I haven't cooked in a few days because of this so I'm jonesin' for some new ingredients. We've either eaten leftovers or ordered out the past few nights so I took the opportunity to update the menu on the site this evening.

The current menu is set to commence this weekend, so I'm looking forward to a few weeks of yummy Italian fare. The recipes also make pretty large amounts of food, so I'm going to have some delicious leftovers for lunches while I'm at work the next few weeks. I love coming back from the gym, knowing there's a home-cooked delicious something-or-other, waiting to fill me up after a hard workout. It's very comforting to take a container out of the fridge, heat it up and have a little taste of home while sitting in your cube!

I think this menu is timed perfectly for the weird winter/spring weather out there - a little bit refreshing, a little bit comforting and warming. Jamie Oliver's recipes always make for such feel-good, rustic dishes. So, check out the current menu, and I'll see ya back here with something Italian very, very soon!

I've got an idea!

I've got a crazy idea! It's time to make a new menu so we can go food shopping on Friday evening - our new night of choice for this task since the stores are empty! I started browsing through my recipes, preparing to start my list when I thought, wait a minute! Maybe my readers can help!

So, here's what I'm proposing...

  • Is there an ingredient that you would like to learn more about in the coming weeks?
  • Have you seen a cookbook that you'd like to hear more about?
  • Do you have a recipe that you've been dying to try...but you're still just a little intimidated?
  • Interested in learning a specific technique?
I would love to help! Comment on this post to leave me your ideas and I will try to incorporate them into my menu this time around. If it works out well, we'll do this from now on, and if I get too many requests (ooo, I hope that happens!!) then whatever I don't get to this time around will certainly roll over into the next list, I promise. And, I will definitely mention you in my post if it was your suggestion - I'm all about giving credit where credit is due.

If you feel strange commenting on the post to let me know what you'd like to see on the menu, feel free to shoot me an email, instead.

Making A List, Checking It Twice

I promised a post on making your grocery list, and here it is!

Once you've made your menu, you should have a bunch of recipes set aside with lists of ingredients. There are plenty of ways to make your list, but the key is sticking to it! :) We all go to the grocery store, and something's on sale..."Ooo, that sounds good...." so we buy it, and then we come home, and it goes with nothing else we bought, and then it goes bad before we end up eating it. Stick to the list, and this will happen a LOT less often - I can't promise it will NEVER happen, because things sound good, we buy them, they go bad, and sometimes there's nothing you can do about it, but at least it will curb the spending a little bit!

I have an iPhone app that comes in extremely handy for my grocery list. It's called Shopper, and I think it goes for 99 cents. It has a lot of features which I haven't really explored, but the basic list is perfect for me. You can do the same thing on a piece of paper, or in a Word doc...whatever.

Take your recipes that you chose for the menu, and write down all the ingredients. If there are duplicates, say, two recipes call for leeks, make note of it, but don't write it down twice. Once you have your complete list, go through your pantry, and check off (or cross out) all the things that you already have. Maybe you bought soy sauce for a meal last week, and you still have half a bottle. You don't need to buy more! Once you've done that, you have your list!

You'll also learn, with time, how to plan your menus to maximize your purchases. If a recipe calls for fresh rosemary, and you buy a whole pack of it, but don't use it any other recipe, it is bound to go bad at some point. I try and take that into consideration when I plan my menu. Say, there's three different recipes that need fresh rosemary...I'm much more likely to use up my purchase that way, then if I only need one sprig, but buy a whole package. It's okay if it doesn't always work out this way...but if you try and make it a habit, you'll find that you are doing it without even realizing it.

Now, when you go to the grocery store, you have a set list that corresponds to the meals that you are going to make while you are at home. If you are going to make sides to go with your main course (always a good idea!), make sure those items are included in your list as well. I also try and group them in my list by area of the store, so that I can go through one section, while I send my husband off to gather things from another section. It's an adventure for him, I think! :)

I hope this makes sense, and that some of you try it out. Let me know how it works out for you...and if you find that something else works better for you...PLEASE SHARE! I'm always interested in new and fun ways of doing things! If you have questions, totally ask them! If they require a long answer, I'll use it as a post one day; otherwise I'll just respond directly in the comments.
